Walking
Newton Grange is a fabulous location for walking, with footpaths and bridleways from the doorstep and the Pennine Way and Leeds Liverpool Canal close at hand. For guests walking the Pennine Way, we work with Brigantes English Walks who transport luggage between destinations.
Newton Grange boasts a wealth of opportunities for local walking and is an excellent base from which to set off to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
The National Park is home to the ‘Three Peaks’ - Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Many a walker sets off on the Three Peaks Challenge from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, beyond Settle.
Upper Wharfedale boasts dramatic scenery and the picturesque village of Kettlewell is well worth a visit, not least as a base from which to climb Great Whernside and Buckden Pike.
Across the border in to Lancashire, Pendle Hill dominates the skyline and provides a rewarding climb to 557 m.
The nearby Forest of Bowland is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Gisburn Forest is a popular choice for walkers.
From the doorstep why not try one of the routes described by Great Walks in Britain? A moderate 9 mile walk from Gargrave is described that takes in part of the Pennine Way and the Leeds Liverpool Canal, passing very close to Newton Grange, where it is possible to join the route.
The Pennine Way
The Pennine Way, described as “amongst the finest upland walking in England” is a 268 mile National Trail taking in the Pennine Mountain tops along the rugged backbone of England, from the Peak District through the Yorkshire Dales and over Hadrian's Wall to the Cheviots.
From the doorstep of Newton Grange you can join the Pennine Way, just 70 miles after its start in Edale, and follow its progress to Malham and beyond. Malham Cove is renowned for its limestone scenery, attracting visitors from all over the world.
At Newton Grange we work with Brigantes English Walks who provide a Baggage Transfer service for walkers
The Leeds Liverpool Canal
Adjacent to the Leeds Liverpool Canal, with its towpath, pleasure boats and birdlife, Newton Grange offers opportunities to walk and cycle from the doorstep. It is located on the longest stretch of the canal without locks, between Bank Newton and Barnoldswick. Watch the canal boats move through the series of locks at Bank Newton, and explore a little further to find a hidden wildflower meadow.
